Creating a Relaxing Meditation Environment
A quiet room is really all you need in order to meditate. However, a few enhancements can make the room more inviting and improve your ability to relax. Try these ideas for creating a truly relaxing meditation room.
After you have designated a certain area as your meditation room, it’s time to begin creating the right environment. For starters, make sure there’s no clutter so it’s as stress free as possible. Make sure your room has enough space for comfortable seating arrangements. Benches, cushions, mats and chairs are all common meditation perches. Another popular choice are meditation chairs. They enable you to keep your back straight and prevent you from slumping during meditation.
Another thing you can have in your meditation room is one or two small tables. They’re great for holding incense, candles and a music player. These tables are also useful for holding photos or prints. Many people find nature images like clouds, trees, mountains and water to be very relaxing.
Lighting is another important factor in the creation of a relaxing atmosphere. Try installing a dimmer on your light switch or lamp. You might prefer to use candles placed strategically around the room. Scented candles in particular can be a wonderful mood enhancer. But if you already have incense burning, stick with unscented candles or you’ll have too many competing aromas.
For background music, try out a few options like nature sounds or quiet music. Some people enjoy the sound of whistling trees while others prefer the music of running water. Keep experimenting until you find the perfect relaxing sounds that don’t distract you.
Some people find that scented candles and incense are too overwhelming. Flowers are a great alternative, however. Fill a simple vase with flowers that you bought at the florist or that you cut from your garden. For many, having flowers in the room provides a real sense of relaxation.
You can even take the spirit of your meditation room on the road with you when you travel. Get an inflatable cushion and a few travel candles and stash them in your bag. Keep your background music stored on your portable music player and you’ll be able to perform your meditation techniques anywhere.
When you create a relaxing environment, it’s easy to close your eyes, clear your mind and then leave feeling completely refreshed.
